Cycle to work scheme
In the UK we have a cycle to work scheme to encourage more bike use. However it has certain limitations - "Employers can pay up to 20 pence per mile tax free to employees
who use their own cycles for business travel. Journeys between home
and work are not business travel for this purpose. So it gives you a a bike loan or cheap bike through your employer so this might encourage you to get on your bike. Other important bits: the employer should also consider installing secure cycle parking, providing showers, establishing a bicycle user group (BUG) and inviting a cycle training provider to carry out an instruction course on safe cycling. See the government site about this cycle to work scheme or ask your employer if they're willing to encourage cycle use! But are the roads safe? Have a look at the cycle paths near you. Do any end in silly places? If you can safely take a picture of the cyle path crazyness then you should email it in to us and we'll publish it here
Starting them young - bikeability - http://www.bikeability.org.uk/ is a site to encourage cycle training for children Cycling England Cycling England is the national body which co-ordinates the development of cycling across England. We aim to create the conditions which will result in more people cycling, more safely, more often. Cycling England was launched by the Minister for Local Transport in March 2005, replacing the previous National Cycling Strategy Board. We are supported by a group representing a number of Government Departments, including health, education, planning and sport as well as transport. |
